Drawing Pencils

For starting out your practice in drawing you should first look for pencils that are specially made for drawing purposes.

There are different types of pencils when it comes to drawing

SOFT PENCIL – 2B, 4B, 6B, 8B

MEDIUM HARD – HB (Basic pencil which everyone uses)

HARD PENCILS – 2H, 4H, 6H, 8H

The soft pencils are the darkest one and because of its softness it gets easily applied on the paper without much pressure.

The higher number you go on the soft pencils the darker pencil it is.

All the major drawing including shading is done by the soft pencils,

The medium pencil is used for outlining the drawing and the hard pencil is used for very minute details.

Charcoal pencils

Charcoal Pencils

When you want to create a high-contrast drawing with real-looking dark shadows the graphite drawing pencils are not enough.

You have to get your hands on the charcoal pencils.

You have to use these pencils on very dark shadows and darker areas to just pop the light area and this thing can give your drawing a realistic or life-like feel.

Charcoal pencils also come in three types:-

SOFT CHARCOAL PENCIL – For shading or filling big areas, because of its softness you can manipulate the darkness by handling your hand pressure.

MEDIUM CHARCOAL PENCIL – For small areas or details, it has a medium strength so it doesn’t spread charcoal too much on the paper, so you can handle it in smaller areas.

HARD CHARCOAL PENCIL – Just like graphite pencils these hard pencils are also for very small details like drawing hair strands or skin texture.

It is very hardened charcoal so you also have to apply hard pressure to get something out of it.
